Benefits of the filter and softener combo Uses no salt or potassium Wastes no water or electricity Virtually maintenance free Reduces limescale formation on pipes, faucets, shower heads Extended’s the life of your appliances Healthy & environmentally friendly Industry Best The process of our salt-free water softener media uses water flow to naturally prevent limescale buildup. The process takes hard water (calcium and magnesium) and transforms the ions into microscopic nanocrystals. This suspends the particles so that it cannot “stick” or cause scale while the water travels through. FilterSmart Salt-Free Softener does not add anything or remove anything from the water, retaining the important naturally occurring minerals, especially calcium and magnesium. It is becoming increasingly common for municipalities to ban the use of automatic salt water softeners. FilterSmart Whole House Filter and Salt-Free Softener requires virtually no maintenance; no residual costs and does not harm the environment, pipes or water heaters. Easy, Low-Cost Installation TESTED AND CERTIFIED Our salt-free media is effective in preventing limescale. Unlike salt-based softeners, FilterSmart Water Softener & Filter Combo won’t demineralize your water by chemically removing minerals replaced by sodium nor will it put excess salt waste or chemicals into our environment. All this while protecting your home's plumbing, extending the life of your washing machine, water heater, dishwasher and other appliances. Hard water does not stand a chance. All natural salt-free water softening for a scale-free, healthier home. Uses no salt or electricity and wastes zero water. Can be used in areas where water softeners are banned. Long lasting media-not consumed by the reactions. No control valve or electricity required. Media operates in up-flow condition. Certified tanks and valves Green Filter and Softener Design For Eco-Friendly Homes Naturally softened water without salt Protects the environment and reduces water usage Leaves in beneficial minerals No salt or other chemical regenerants required Lifetime Warranty! Premium components that are built to last. Our warranty covers tanks and valve heads for life. Once media inside the tank expire, simply remove heads and exchange for new media without having to buy a whole new system. Sediment Pre Filter Kit All our water systems at FilterSmart come with a pre-filter housing and mounting bracket to be installed prior to the water softener. The sediment pre-filter removes any fine sediment, silt or debris that is in the water. The filter is recommended to be changed every 8-10 months and is easy to do for any homeowner. Whole House Water Filter And Softener Combo FAQs How Large Are The Tanks? Our 1-3 Bath 12 GPM systems uses 9 x 48” tanks and sits about 52 inches tall, including the valve head. The 4-6 Bath 15 GPM system uses 10x54” tanks and sits about 58 inches tall. For single tanks, we recommend 20x10” space. For our combos, we recommend a 30x10” space. What Is Hard Water? Hard water is water that contains dissolved minerals, usually calcium and magnesium. It’s commonly measured in grains per gallon (GPG). As these dissolved minerals can clump together to produce scale – which can harm your internal pipes, plumbing, and home appliances – hard water can be a nuisance. Our systems can help manage it. What Are The Tanks Made Out Of? Our mineral tanks are built out of USA-made high-spun fiberglass, and they’re certified for safety. We offer a lifetime guarantee against manufacturer defects. Unfortunately, not all tanks on the market are made to such standards. Is Hard Water Bad For You? No. Calcium and magnesium are naturally occurring minerals that are generally considered to be a benefit to a healthy diet. However, these minerals are a nuisance for internal plumbing, appliances, shower or faucet heads, and heating elements. How Does The Filter and Softener Combo Work? For quality and price, the FilterSmart water filter and softener system is the best combo system on the market. We have combined our whole house carbon filter with our salt free water softener to create the very best in water treatment. With zero salt softening and carbon filtration, you get the best of both worlds when it comes to scale-free quality drinking water at every tap in your home. Our up-flow design requires no electricity or extra drain for backwashing. Changing out the sediment pre-filter every 6-8 months is the only maintenance required. The dual tank all-in-one salt-less system has a sediment pre-filter for sediment rust and debris, a carbon filter for chlorine and contaminants, and then a salt-free softener tank for the treatment of hard water. Traditional salt systems simply take unfiltered tap water and replace healthy minerals for sodium. Our combo system retains all the healthy minerals while filtering out harmful contaminants and providing quality drinking water for your entire home. How Does The Combo Compare to Other Whole House Systems? FilterSmart has been a leader in no salt water softening for almost a decade. We have developed and tested a variety of salt free water softening mediums, finding the very best at scale reduction and longevity. Our carbon filters use the best coconut shell carbon from Jacobi, the worldwide leader in activated carbons. All of our parts carry a certification, and our tanks and valves are guaranteed for a lifetime. If there’s any leak in the tank, we will send out a replacement part for as long as you own the system. With industry-leading customer support – from ordering, installation and maintenance – there is simply no better company for your water treatment needs. For quality, price, guarantee and media we use our combo system simply cannot be beat. How Can You Test A Salt Free System? Testing a water softener that does not use salt is different than a traditional salt based system. A standard test strip to test for hardness will still read hard with a salt free system because calcium and magnesium is technically still in the water; it’s just in a suspended state. The water hardness may actually go up initially as it removes any existing scale that could be attached to pipes. The best way to test is to check pipes for limescale build-up. If you have initial hard water build-up, it can take time for the system to remove any existing scale. We recommend draining a water heater tank prior to installation to help flush existing hard water build-up. What Does The Carbon Filter Remove? Activated charcoal carbon filters are most effective at removing chlorine, chloramine, disinfectant by-products, sediment, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), taste and odor from water as well as hundreds of other inorganic based compounds. Activated carbon does not remove salt or dissolved solids from the water. Why Do I need To Filter The Water? Chlorine is added to local municipalities as a disinfectant. As a result, city water is generally responsible for dry skin, and it typically has a poor taste and odor. Chlorine can create disinfectant byproducts which have also been known to cause health issues. Activated carbon is the best way to remove chlorine and other byproducts, as well as almost all other chemical compounds that can find their way into the local water supply. If your water district uses chloramine as a disinfectant, our PRO series uses a catalytic carbon that’s designed specifically for chloramine removal. You can contact your local water district, or simply google your zip code along with the words “water quality report” and that should pull up your most recent report. On the report, look for "disinfectant used" to see if they use chlorine or chloramine (a mixture of chlorine and ammonia) – or something else. If you need any help or have any questions, contact our customer support and we’ll help you. What Is The Difference Between a Salt and Salt Free System? Salt-based water softeners use ion exchange to replace calcium and magnesium ions with salt. This, of course, results in the depletion of calcium and magnesium and a higher level of sodium in the water. Salt-based water softeners also waste water through backwashing and require a drain and electrical hookup. Water softeners do not filter contaminants from the water; they simply exchange the calcium and magnesium with sodium, thus producing soft water. Salt-free systems act as a conditioner, taking the calcium and magnesium and turning them into microscopic nano crystals that become suspended in water so they cannot attach to appliances and pipes to create scale. The most noticeable difference is that salt-free water softeners don’t leave your skin slimy or slippery like traditional salt based systems. Our customers, however, do notice a softer feeling from the water. How Often Does The Media Need to Be Replaced? The carbon media comes with a 5 year or 1,000,000 gallon guarantee. We guarantee the carbon reducing chlorine to undetectable levels for that period. When the carbon media needs to be replaced simply, order a replacement bag of carbon, dump out the expired media, and refill the tanks with new media. The salt-free softener media generally does not need to be replaced. How Do I know if I need The Whole House Filter or The Combo System? The carbon filter is perfect for residences that don’t have excessive limescale build-up, or for residences that don’t suffer too badly from any problems associated with hard water. If you do have hard water and would like to reduce the effect of limescale, then the whole house water filter and softener combo is the better option. You can also add in our salt free water softener at a later date if you decide to treat hardness. This way, if you’re not quite sure whether or not you need a water softener, you can significantly reduce your upfront costs with no issues. Where Is the Combo System Installed? The whole house water systems are installed on the main water line at the home’s point of entry. The point of entry (POE) differs from house to house, but it’s usually either in the garage or outside – right by the water shut-off valve. Your local plumber will determine the point of entry and, by extension, the best point of installation. You also may have an existing water softener loop where the system would be installed, but virtually any plumber will be able to determine the best place to install the system. How Often Do The Pre-filters Need To Be Replaced? The string-wound sediment pre-filters need to be replaced every 8-10 months. This can be done by any homeowner. Is The System Certified? Most of our parts carry the certified mark. See the “Literature” tab for each individual part that’s certified. AquaSorb HS acid washed coconut shell carbon by Jacobi is also certified. What Is The Guarantee On the Combo System? We offer a lifetime guarantee on all tanks and valve heads. We also offer a 5-Year or 1,000,000 gallon guarantee on the carbon that’s used to reduce chlorine to undetectable levels – otherwise, we will replace the carbon free of charge. We also send out any replacement parts for any leaks on all tanks or tank heads. How Do You Ship The Combo System? We offer free UPS ground shipping in the continental U.S. The systems come pre-filled with media, ready to be installed. We ship from our warehouse within 1-3 business days. What Is The Return Policy? We offer a try-it-and-love-it-or-your-money-back, 90 day full refund. If you have any further questions, one of our representatives will be glad to help. You can call us at 866-455-9989.

You can get our whole house water filter system, and then, if you’re unsure whether you need to treat the hard water, just add our salt free softener to make a combination system later. How Does Activated Carbon Work? Our tanks come pre-loaded with granular activated carbon (GAC). To remove contaminant impurities, activated carbon works through the process of adsorption. Each particle, or granule, of carbon provides a large surface area, or pore structure, allowing contaminants the maximum possible exposure to the active sites within the filter media. One gram of activated carbon has a surface area in excess of 3,000 square meters (32,000 square feet). The large surface structure, plus the prolonged contact time, maximizes water filtering capacity. What Are The Benefits To Whole Home Water Filtration? The main benefit of whole home purification system is that every tap in your home is filtered before the water is used – whether it’s for washing, bathing, or drinking. With a large mineral tank filled with activated carbon, you get a much longer contact time for contaminant removal than a standard point of use filter. Whole home water filters also last much longer and require less maintenance and filter changes. You can also treat water hardness with a point of entry system for the added protection for your home’s plumbing, faucets, and appliances. Does The System Work For Well Water? Yes. However it does not remove iron, hydrogen sulfide or manganese. What Does The Whole House Water Filter Remove? What Kind Of Water Quality Can I Expect? Coconut shell activated carbon is used to purify the water. It also improves the quality, overall taste, and the smell of the water. Most of our customers compare our filtered water to the taste of bottled water. The water filter is a purifier that also removes the unpleasant odor associated with disinfecting water with chlorine. You can also expect softer skin and hair from showering, as chlorine is a disinfectant and acts as a drying agent. Our water purification system removes any negative effects of drying agents, so you won’t have anything to worry about if you’re local municipality uses chlorine as a disinfectant. Water purification is also very beneficial to your overall health, as your body will absorb more chlorine through the skin than even by drinking the water. Prior to the water entering your home, the disinfecting agent and odors will be removed. Overall, this results in improved health. Does The Carbon Need To Be Flushed Prior To Installation? Yes. All activated charcoal filters must be pre-flushed prior to use. It is recommended to pre-flush and soak the carbon tank 24-48 hours prior to installation to flush out any carbon dust and allow the carbon to soak for a period of time before start-up. This helps keep carbon from coming into the house water supply and taps. We provide a hose adapter to properly pre-flush the carbon filter. Be sure to plan for a pre-soak period of a day or two before installing the water filter unit. How Does The System Arrive? All tanks come pre-loaded with filtering media inside including by-pass and 1 inch male connectors. What Is The Return Policy? We offer a try-it-and-love-it-or-your-money-back, 90 day full refund. The process takes hard water (calcium and magnesium) and transforms the ions into microscopic nanocrystals. This suspends the particles so that it cannot “stick” or cause scale while the water travels through. FilterSmart Whole House Salt-Free Softener does not add anything or remove anything from the water, retaining the important naturally occurring minerals, especially calcium and magnesium. Salt-using softeners must be regularly recharged by adding more salt and back-flushing with fresh water, which is costly, inconvenient, corrosive to pipes and water heaters, harmful to the environment and wasteful of a precious resource. Industry Best Salt-free water softeners have been found to be effective in preventing limescale. Unlike salt-based softeners, FilterSmart Salt-Free Water Softener won’t demineralize your water by chemically removing minerals replaced by sodium nor will it put excess salt waste or chemicals into our environment. All this while protecting your home's plumbing, extending the life of your washing machine, water heater, dishwasher and other appliances. Our warranty covers tanks and valve heads for life. Any manufacturer defect is covered under warranty for life. We will gladly send a replacement part free of charge if any component does not meet our standards. Sediment Pre-Filter Kit All our water systems at FilterSmart come with a pre-filter housing and mounting bracket to be installed prior to the water softener. The sediment pre-filter removes any fine sediment, silt or debris that is in the water. The filter is recommended to be changed every 8-10 months and is easy to do for any homeowner. Salt-Free Water Softener FAQs How Large Are The Tanks? Our 1-3 Bath 12 GPM systems uses 9 x 48” tanks and sits about 52 inches tall, including the valve head. No. Calcium and magnesium are naturally occurring minerals that are generally considered to be a benefit to a healthy diet. However, these minerals are a nuisance for internal plumbing, appliances, shower or faucet heads, and heating elements. Does The Water Softener Filter The Water? The sediment pre-filter removes fine sediment, rust, and debris from the water – but salt free water softeners do not remove any contaminants. Salt-free conditioners simply treat the scaling issues as a result of hard water. If you’re looking at filtering the water and improving the overall taste and odor, then our whole house filter and salt free water softener combo is the better option. Our whole house water filters systems use granulated activated carbon to remove impurities and contaminants commonly found in tap water. How Do You Test A Salt Free Water Conditioner System? Testing a water softener that does not use salt is different than a traditional salt based system. A standard test strip to test for hardness will still read hard with a saltless water softener system because calcium and magnesium is technically still in the water; it’s just in a suspended state. Does It Work For Well Water? Yes. However there can be no iron, hydrogen sulfide or manganese. If there are noticeable levels of any of those elements, pre-treatment is necessary as with any salt free media on the market. These elements can foul salt free media. What Is The Difference Between Salt Free Softeners, Conditioners and Anti-scale Systems? Salt-free softeners, water conditioners, and anti-scale systems all fall under the “no salt water treatment” category. Generally, salt-free softeners act as conditioners in the traditional sense: they condition water so that calcium and magnesium cannot stick to surfaces and create scale. Thus, they are often referred to as anti-scale systems, because they prohibit scale from forming. These systems all use a catalytic bead media to treat water hardness. These media treatment systems are very different from magnetic or electronic water softeners that claim to treat hard water. They’ve been proven by Arizona State University in an extensive study. Salt free softeners that use catalytic bead media are scientifically valid and backed, while the latter – magnetic or electronic water softeners – have not shown results. How Does Salt Free Softener Media Work? Salt-free water softeners use template assisted crystallization to treat hard water. In cold water, calcium ions (Ca2+), magnesium ions (Mg+2) and bicarbonate ions (HCO3-) are surrounded by “layers” of electrochemically-attracted water molecules, which “insulate” against the natural tendency of oppositely-charged ions to come together and form crystals. Atomic level templates on the surface of the media act as catalysts and reduce the ability of calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate ions from coming together to form crystals of calcium and magnesium scale. This process, that we refer to as template assisted crystallization (TAC), results in the creation of microscopic crystals of scale (seed crystals), which rapidly form in treated water, not on the contact surfaces of the water system, and are carried downstream in colloidal suspension through the water system. TAC has been tested by Arizona State University, and it was found to be the most promising technology with scale reductions over 90%. Are There Any Studies Proving The Effectiveness Of Salt Free Water Softeners? The best study done to prove the effectiveness of salt-free water softening technologies is the one done by Arizona State University. The ASU study was conducted by a 3rd party that tested TAC media, magnetic, ion exchange, and electromagnetic devices against hard Arizona tap water at a variety of different temperatures. The study showed a 90%+ effectiveness on TAC media. Magnetic and electronic? Not so much. You can see the study here: https://watereuse.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Webinar-WateReuse-08-06.pdf How Often Do The Pre-filters Need To Be Change? The string-wound sediment pre-filters need to be replaced every 8-10 months. This can be done by any homeowner. Is There A Reduction In Water Pressure? No. If correctly installed, our systems do not change or drop the water pressure. Who Installs The System? Anyone with basic plumbing skills can easily install our systems. If you don’t know someone with basic plumbing skills, any local plumber will have no problem with the installation. If you need help finding a plumber, try Angie's List or Home Advisor for a list of local plumbers in your area. What Does The Warranty Cover? Our lifetime warranty covers the tanks and valves against any manufacturer's defect. Warranties are voided if improperly used or improperly installed against manufacturer specifications. Please read all manuals and instructions prior to use. Are The Systems Certified? Most of our parts carry the certified mark. See the “Literature” tab for each individual part that’s certified. AquaSorb HS acid washed coconut shell carbon by Jacobi is also certified. How Do You Ship The Systems? We offer free UPS ground shipping in the continental U.S. The systems come pre-filled with media, ready to be installed. We ship from our warehouse within 1-3 business days.
