Known for its lasting strength and durability, maple has long been the traditional wood used for cutting boards and butcher's blocks. We use sustainably harvested (certified FSC) premium-grade maple for these beautiful blonde colored end grain cutting boards. We carefully join solid hardwood using a professional-grade, waterproof adhesive that is FDA-approved for indirect food contact (an extra step many makers skip because it is 3 times the cost of cheaper glues). Thanks to the precision of our joinery and the unusually large solid wood blocks we use; your knife almost exclusively contacts wood when you chop. We did the math, and the total amount of glue your knife could encounter (on both faces of the board) is roughly equivalent to the size of a single grain of table salt. We finish every board by hand with food-safe oil and Board Butter —because real craftsmanship means choosing quality, proven, and safe materials and doing things the right way, not the fast way. Built to be beautiful. Built to last. Average weights of each end grain butcher block/cutting board (after oiling) are: 12 X 18, 9-10 lbs 16 X 22, 18-19 lbs 18 X 24, 23-24 lbs Our standard maple end grain cutting boards are 2" thick. Cutting board feet add an additional 3/4" and are highly recommended unless the user is under 5'3" (160cm) in height. *Photos are for demonstration only. Yours will look unique due to the variations in natural wood. All boards are made to order and take 3-4 weeks to fabricate. *Bonus - add a sidekick to any order with a full-sized end grain block to get 15% off of the sidekick. Discount automatically added at checkout - does not combine with other offers or discounts.

The best way to care for a butcher block is with a combination of Cutting Board Oil and Board Butter. Chopping board oil penetrates deeply into wood fibers, and board butter is a great surface protectant that also gives the board a nice luster. Our cutting board care kits contain the same board butter we've been making for the last 20 years and the same oil that we soak our butcher block in before shipping them to you. Our chopping board oil has a lower viscosity than some on the market, allowing it to penetrate and protect wood fibers better. Our beeswax is sourced from a beekeeper and conservationist in Ohio we've worked with for years. Most beeswax these days is sourced in China, and is often adulterated with large percentages of paraffin and stearin. Ours, on the other hand, is 100% beeswax and sourced exclusively in the U.S. (typically from hives in Ohio, North Dakota, and Idaho). Includes Board Butter (a mixture of Beeswax and USP Food Safe Mineral Oil in a resealable tub) and Cutting Board Oil (USP Food Safe Mineral Oil in a resealable bottle). Available in three sizes: Medium (4 oz Board Butter + 12 oz Cutting Board Oil Large (8 oz Board Butter + 16 oz Cutting Board Oil) XL (8 oz Board Butter + 24 oz Cutting Board Oil) *As a point of reference, an un-oiled 16 X 22 maple butcher block can typically hold 12-14 ounces of cutting board oil. Boardsmith butcher blocks have been oiled prior to shipping, but they still need heavy initial oiling when you receive them. How to use: Thoroughly clean, sanitize, and dry the cutting surface of your board. Pour Cutting Board Oil on face of the board an ounce or two at a time until oil can no longer absorb into the board. This process might take a few minutes. Let dry and wipe away any excess.Using a soft cloth apply a quarter-sized dab of Board Butter and rub inFinish by buffing off any excess butter This product is intended to be an add on item. Due to the weight of the cutting board care kit, we must charge for shipping when it is ordered on its own. To save on shipping, consider ordering with one of our other items to reach the free shipping minimum. Note: Because these are consumable items, care kits can not be returned.

Crafted with sustainably harvested Black Walnut. These dark wood cutting boards have a deep chocolate color highlighted with black streaks and some lighter-colored sapwood. Each board we make is completely unique and dependent on the tree that grew the wood. Due to the wide variation in colors within walnut we cannot guarantee any particular look or aesthetic. Of the three hardwoods we use, walnut arguably has the highest 'Wow!' factor. In terms of durability, the walnut end grain butcher block has the perfect balance of scratch resistance and gentleness on knife edges.
